An 80-year-old neighbor surprised Michigan Democratic candidate Mai Xiong when he showed up at her door and asked for one of her campaign yard signs.

The interaction was caught on a Ring doorbell camera and later shared by Xiong on TikTok. The video shows the elderly man walking up to the house and ringing the bell. After a brief exchange of small talk, he gets straight to the point and tells Xiong he would like one of her signs.

@maixiongmi

The other day as I was leaving the house to pickup my kids from school, an 80-year-old neighbor came by and asked me for a yard sign. I have often seen him walking his dogs on our street and he will sometimes stop to talk to me if I’m outside doing yard work, and tell me he would read about me in the papers, or get attack mailers about me delivered to his house from my opponents. He also told me he used to be a Republican delegate, but since Trump, he has no longer supported Republicans. On this day, he came by and finally asked me for a yard sign and wanted to stand at the polls for me on Election Day. His wife is very sick, and he’s been caring for her. It’s people like my neighbors who I’m fighting for. I’m grateful to be representing them and for his allyship. Despite all the attacks and accusations waged against me, he managed to see through all of that and said I was a good person. He’s proud that I’m his neighbor and knows how hard I’m working for him. I know we often see or hear negative news and stories about division, so I am glad I could share this moment and message with all of you. Being brave and standing up for the right thing, will always win over hate and division. Here’s to us winning in November. 🍻

Xiong is a Democrat representing the 13th House District, which covers Warren, Roseville, and St. Clair Shores. Xiong posted the Ring footage to TikTok, captioning it with the story of her 80-year-old neighbor, a man she says was once a Republican delegate but has since drifted from the party since Donald Trump’s rise.

Text added to the video describes the moment as: “POV: 80-year-old, lifelong Republican neighbour knocks on door to ask me, a democrat, for my yard sign.”

In the video, they can both be seen chitchatting before Xiong goes inside, gets a yard sign, and hands it to him. They then continue to have a casual conversation before walking away from the camera.

According to Xiong’s caption, the two have crossed paths regularly over the years, mostly while he walked his dogs or she worked in her yard. She said he would mention reading about her in the local paper, or receiving attack mailers targeting her from her opponents.

He also told her he wanted to stand at the polls for her on Election Day. Xiong wrote that his wife is currently very sick and that he has been her caregiver, adding that she is grateful for what she called his allyship heading into November.

Internet Reacts to Michigan Neighbor’s Party Switch

The video drew a wave of sympathetic comments once it started circulating. Several viewers focused on the courage it must have taken the man to walk over and ask. One commenter wrote, “I’m sure he’s been debating on coming over to ask you for a sign for a while and finally got the courage to do so.” Another tied the story to a broader shift they believe is happening, writing, “Hope is in the air. People are waking up to the terrible reality we living in.”

Other commenters were moved by the neighborly bond on display. One wrote, “Now that is a great neighbor. Your friendship gives me goosebumps!!!” while another framed it as a lesson in nuance: “This is an important story. A reminder that the hate between parties is black & white thinking. A reminder to live in the colors.”

A fifth commenter said they’re hopeful the moment reflects something larger, writing, “I am starting to believe there is a chance more of the older lifetime republican are seeing the current republican party as not the party they can support.”

Xiong represents a district in a state widely considered a presidential and legislative battleground, where control of the Michigan House has swung on narrow margins in recent cycles. Her account of the exchange hasn’t been independently verified beyond her own telling, and Xiong is the only source for the details surrounding her neighbor’s political history.
