The next Call of Duty game, after this year’s Modern Warfare, will reportedly be a Black Ops reboot. This is according to LongSensation, who has accurately leaked Call of Duty titles in the past. In fact, he leaked that this year’s Call of Duty would just be called Modern Warfare, despite the whole industry expecting it to be Modern Warfare 4.

According to LongSensation, two names are being discussed internally thus far. These are Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Call of Duty: Black Ops V. The game will be set during the Cold War, like the original Black Ops, but will span a 40+ year time period that will include the Vietnam War and Korean War. It is also being described as more “gritty and gruesome” than Modern Warfare.

As reported by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier back in May, Treyarch (who developed last year’s Black Ops 4), will be the lead developer of this game. Previously, Raven Software was leading, with Sledgehammer Games assisting the Wisconsin squad. During the development of this game, tensions were high between the two studios, and the game was described as a “mess”. Activision stepped in, and assigned Treyarch to the lead role, with Sledgehammer and Raven now assisting them.
If this rumor does turn out to be true, it will be two successive years where a popular Call of Duty sub-series would have essentially been rebooted. This year’s Modern Warfare does feature familiar characters but is set in an entirely different universe to the first three games.
Unlike Treyarch’s last game (Black Ops 4), it is reported this Black Ops reboot will feature a single-player campaign. In 2018, Treyarch and Activision were hugely criticized for a lack of a campaign and the introduction of a battle royale mode in its place.
