Xbox Game Studios has broken new ground by announcing, Tell Me Why, the first game from a major publisher to feature a transgender protagonist.

Tell Me Why sees identical twins Alyson and Tyler Ronan, who are from a small Alaskan community being reunited after 10 years apart following a major event. The player will come to understand what drove the characters from each other, investigating their shared memories while exploring the town and talking to local inhabitants.

This reveal came from the Xbox London event, X019, with plans to release the title on Xbox One, Game Pass and Windows in 2020. Take a look at the announcement trailer below.

Tell Me The Names Behind This

Life is Strange 2
A night in the woods only makes their bond stronger.

The title is being developed by Dontnod, the company behind games such as the critically acclaimed Life is Strange or Remember Me. Tell Me Why is also being made with input from the LGBTQ group GLAAD, which is something Joseph Staten, Xbox’s senior creative director, commented on saying,

“One of the things that GLAAD did that was especially helpful was they gave us a history lesson, not just in games, but in media as well — the good and the bad. It’s been really important for everyone on the project to understand the history of LGBTQ representation and transgender representation in games to make sure we did our best to get it right.”

When it comes to the transgender protagonist Tyler, GLADD played a role in picking the transgender actor August Aiden Black to portray them.

This spring will see Tell Me Why will be available for purchase over three chapters and we’ll keep you updated as more news is unveiled about the title.
