Sega’s critically acclaimed Yakuza series is officially heading to PlayStation’s next-generation console. The latest installment, Yakuza: Like A Dragon, is set to launch on the PlayStation 5 on March 2, 2021. Though the PlayStation 4 edition of Yakuza: Like A Dragon won’t be arriving in the western market until early November 2021. The announcement was made official by Sega’s in-house studio Ryu Ga Gotoku via Twitter.

Alongside the announcement of Yakuza: Like A Dragon coming to the PlayStation 5, we received some exceptional information regarding the next-generation upgrade of the game. Digital owners of the PlayStation 4 edition will receive an upgrade free of charge on the release of Yakuza: Like A Dragon to the PlayStation 5. The upgrade will be available via the PlayStation Store immediately.  While you can find the dialogue surrounding cross-generation titles and next-generation updates in most gaming media conversations, it seems as though Sega has chosen to take a more consumer-friendly approach. That is, at least with Yakuza: Like A Dragon thus far.

Yakuza Like A Dragon

Fans of the Yakuza franchise have many things to be excited about beyond the release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon. If you haven’t heard the latest news, a live-action Yakuza film is in the works. While video game cinema hasn’t always been the best representation of the source material, the folks over at 1212 Entertainment seem to have a grasp on the universe of Yakuza. We’re hoping for a successful turnout as the story revolving the franchise’s leading man Kazuma Kiryu deserves to be told on the silver screen. I am more than sure viewers of the film will fall in love with the duality of his character.

Fans can also get their hands on the Yakuza Remastered Collection in stores now. The collection includes Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, and Yakuza 5 all running at 1080p and 60fps. This is three of the franchise’s best installments being repackaged for a much smoother running experience. These will help you get into Yakuza: Like a Dragon a lot easier, so I suggest you pick them up. You won’t regret it. The franchise was already a powerhouse name, but I believe we’re about to witness a global power shift for Yakuza with the addition of next-generation titles and cinematography.
