Looks like the USS Enterprise is about to be visited by one of Westview’s citizens. WandaVision director Matt Shakman has been hired to take Star Trek to a new chapter in their movie franchise.

According to Deadline, production on the new Star Trek movie should begin next spring, however, there has been no news on who will be starring in the next installment. This new development comes just as Paramount is working on the next move for Star Trek. The untitled Star Trek movie has been cycled through different directors, including Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley. After two years of working on the project, Quentin left development and decided to steer away from the franchise. Hawley’s film was canceled after new leadership at Paramount was given, with the company looking to find a different direction with the franchise. It seems like things are back on track as WandaVision director Matt Shakman is talking the helms of the next Star Trek film.

The script for the new movie is being written by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Currently, Beer is making her directorial debut with the prequel to 2019’s Pet Sematary while Robertson-Dworset is writing the next Sherlock Holmes film along with an adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons. This would mark the first Star Trek movie to be written by female screenwriters. J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two Star Trek films in the reboot series, will return as a producer.

This marks as good news for Matt Shakman who is hot off his successful run with WandaVision. The Marvel miniseries recently earned 23 Emmy nominations, giving one for Shakman for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series. Other than WandaVision, he has also directed a couple of episodes on hit shows like Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Succession, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. This new Star Trek movie will be Shakman’s second time directing a feature film, his first one was in 2014 with Cut Bank, which starred Liam Hemsworth, Billy Bob Thornton, and John Malkovich.

The Wandavision director’s Star Trek film is scheduled to be released on June 2023.
