A TV series based on the Academy Award-nominated film, Field of Dreams, is coming to NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock.
This new adaptation of the baseball classic is being helmed by the renowned Michael Schur. Schur has become a household name for TV lovers in recent years. He produced and wrote for multiple comedies like The Office and co-created both Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Parks and Recreation. Schur also created NBC’s The Good Place, which received 14 Primetime Emmy Award nominations during its run.
Joining Michael Schur as an executive producer on the series is Lawrence Gordon from The Gordon Company. Both Gordon himself and The Gordon Company served as producers on the original 1989 film.
According to a report from Variety, the series will reimagine Field of Dream‘s beloved mixture of baseball, magic, family, and even the state of Iowa. Based on a novel from 1982, the film featured Kevin Costner as an Iowa farmer. After receiving instructions from a ghostly voice, Costner’s character, Ray Kinsella, builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield. Once built, the field draws the ghosts of players like “Shoeless” Joe Jackson played by Ray Liotta. The film also featured several other stars, such as James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, and Burt Lancaster.
Many regard Fields of Dreams not only as an American classic but also as one of the best baseball movies ever made. It even received love from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which nominated the film for several awards. The nominations included best picture, best-adapted screenplay, and best score.
The news of this TV adaptation arrives within a week after Major League Baseball staged a game between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees at the real-life Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa. The nostalgic, staged game stands as the most-watched MLB game in 16 years.
While Field of Dreams will not be the first movie adapted into a TV series, it is likely it will also not be the last.
