Trek to Yomi is oddly one of my more highly anticipated indie projects currently in the works. I’m not traditionally a huge fan of side-scrolling games with a few exceptions here and there, but something about its supposedly gripping story and ability to convey a hefty atmosphere devoid of color has genuinely drawn me in. Pair that with combat that looks as tactical as it is visceral, and that seems like a winning combination. Not to mention it’s coming from Flying Wild Hog, the team behind the ever hilarious modern Shadow Warrior games. Today though, the team has some incredibly important news to share. Trek to Yomi is sending its blade towards a May 5 release date, just one month from today! You can check out the extended gameplay video below.

The Way of the Samurai

Trek to Yomi | Extended Gameplay Video

Trek to Yomi’s extended gameplay video begins as anyone would expect, with an ambush and a whole lot of killing from our main character Hiroki. The young swordsman may be fairly inexperienced, though the end of his katana is just as deadly of a weapon as a master samurai. Though this new trailer doesn’t just show endless killing as other trailers have, giving us a glimpse into some of the traversal you’ll be doing in between. Going from walking the tightrope of a conveniently laid log to a crumbling cliffside made worse by inclement weather, our favorite swordsman needs to be extra careful on his journey.

Again, this gameplay video shows just how great Trek to Yomi can look despite being entirely black and white. The rainstorms are just as harsh, blade slices just as hefty, and destroyed villages just as terrifying despite that, attributing to some great craftsmanship through its dev team. The video ends as Hiroki finds himself seemingly facing a boss battle with an evil samurai known only as Sadatame. I’m sure we’ll learn more about them once Trek to Yomi makes its debut on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms on its May 5 release date.

Are you excited about Trek to Yomi? A fan of the team’s Shadow Warrior series? Let me know!
