A new teaser trailer has been released for the upcoming series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. This is the first look we’ve had at the Amazon Prime series since the first teaser was released on Super Bowl Sunday. Variety breaks down the trailer, explaining that it focuses on two characters who we’ve seen before in Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy. Those characters are Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo). Both debate Galadriel’s fear that an enemy believed to be defeated remains a threat to Middle Earth. While Elrond tries to be reassuring, Galadriel tells him, “You have not seen what I have seen.”
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Series Prequel to Trilogy
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series will serve as a prequel to the trilogy. Borrowing slightly from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, the series’ events take place thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The series will center on the rise of the dark lord Sauron, the creation of the rings, and the fall of Númenor. All of these events take place in Tolkien’s created timeline that spans centuries of Middle Earth history.
It has been nearly 70 years since Tolkien’s novels were published, and it’s been just under 20 years since the Best Picture-winning third film was released in theaters. Despite those long-time gaps, The Lord of the Rings remains a thriving franchise. The films are largely considered one of the strongest book-to-film adaptations of all time. And along with this prequel series, an anime film exploring Helm’s Deep is expected in 2024.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, 2022.
