Initiating the Boss Fight King Hrolf in God of War Ragnarok
This article is over 2 years old and may contain outdated information.

To earn the “Grave Mistake” Achievement and complete the Favour “Fit for a King” inย God of War Ragnarok, players must face and defeat the formidable Berserker ruler, King Hrolf. This undead skeletal being is one of the toughest opponents Kratos will face on his journey, so fans must be sure the bearded demigod is well-equipped for the occasion. Such preparations would include upgrading Kratos’s equipment to the highest possible level andย improving one’s preferred Runic Attacks. King Hrolf has many abilities that cannot be blocked, meaning that players must dodge to avoid damage or tank the attack. Therefore, defensive armor is recommended for those less skilled in reactive timing.ย

To initiate the boss battle with King Hrolf inย God of War Ragnarok, players must visit the King’s Graveย landmark in Midgard, where the undead lord’s gravestone can be used to summon the warrior. Slaying this opponent is well worth the effort, rewarding players with thousands of XP, a Gale Flame, the Hilt of Skofnung, and the Berserker Armor Set.

Sourced from suggestions byย YouTuber GuidingLight, below is a list of strategies that players should consider when facing King Hrolf inย God of War Ragnarok:ย

  • Those less skilled in perfect dodges and parries are encouraged to stay on the defensive for the majority of the fight and use Runic Attacks as one’s primary source of damage.
  • Whenever Hrolf is out of Kratos’s attack range, players should immediately be ready to either block with their Shield or dodge to the side.
  • Whenever King Hrolf launches an icy orb at Kratos, use the Leviathan Axe to break the orb before blocking with the Shield to absorb the boss’s follow-up icicle projectiles.
  • During Holf’s rain-of-fireball ability, players must dodge consecutively to avoid being struck.
  • Save specific Runic Attacks or Kratos’s Spartan Rage for moments Hrolf lands a strike, meaning that these powerful abilities should be used as an offensive means to escape a combo instead of only aggressively attacking.
  • Whenever players’ Runic abilities are all on cooldown, play on the defensive by only dodging and blocking damage, as Kratos’s basic attacks will risk players being “combo-ed.”
  • One of the most critical moments to dodge is when the King jumps into the air and sends out projectiles that can deal Permafrost damage to Kratos and potentially remove over half of his max HP.
  • If the boss is too challenging, there is no shame in lowering the difficulty in the game settings to make the fight more manageable.

God of War: Ragnarokย is available exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
