The next big Star Wars comic event, called Dark Droids, has been unveiled. Announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe, this new event will be manned by writer Charles Soule alongside artist Luke Ross. The duo is taking care of the main limited series while several other creators will tackle the aftershocks that hit new and existing series. Not much is known yet about the event, but it does promise some horror elements coming to the Galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars: Dark Droids
The Dark Droids event is an ambitious undertaking hitting the Marvel Star Wars Universe this summer. Officially kicking off in August’s Star Wars: Dark Droids #1, the event will reverberate into a new series, as well as bring horror into four current series in the Star Wars Universe. These series include Star Wars, Star Wars: Darth Vader, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunters.
The Dark Droids event seems to be adding some elements of horror to the franchise for the first time. It all stems from something called the “Scourge.” This is a new threat unleashed throughout the galaxy that works like a corruption. As it encounters droids, cyborgs, and other machine-based entities, it corrupts them, leaving no droid in the galaxy safe. That’s right, it is not just the Rebel Alliance or the Empire that suffers from the effects of this plague, but both. Naturally, chaos ensues as the galaxy is now dealing with this new, and eerie, threat. However, Ajax Sigma from last year’s Star Wars: Revelations may play a role in all of this.
A Look At What’s To Come
Marvel has revealed the synopses for the August tie-in issues and what readers can expect from this Dark Droids event. In Star Wars #37, Lando Calrissian’s friend Lobot is corrupted by this new threat. However, he will do anything, and we mean anything, to save his friend. Then, in Star Wars: Darth Vader #37, killer droids have overrun Darth Vader’s Star Destroyer the Executor. Can Vader stop this new threat, or will he succumb to its will?
Next, in Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #35, the titular Doctor is sent to investigate some strange droid malfunctions in the House of Tagge. However, she gets more than she anticipated when she faces off against a foe from the past: Domina’s Battle Droids! Finally, Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #37 focuses on the Bounty Hunters as they investigate Boba Fett’s father, Jango Fett. It leads them to a mysterious droid outpost that could hold the answers to the galaxy’s problems.
