First, it is worth noting that ghosts do not just appear. Ghost is the character’s death result and the untimely burial of the deceased’s body. So if you bury your people right after they die, you won’t have to deal with ghosts.

If a ghost appears, often, it will just fly and will not interfere with your daily activities. It will cause gossip among the residents but nothing more serious. On the other hand, some ghosts are more aggressive and can scare other characters or even drive them crazy. And in this case, it can cause some inconvenience, and you should get rid of ghosts as soon as possible.

If you have just started your journey in Dwarf Fortress, you can easily keep track of all the characters and bury them when they die. But when there are many more, you won’t notice a few dwarves missing. In addition, some characters may be under the rubble in the mine, or they may drown in the river. In this case, you will not be able to get to the body, and it is simply impossible to bury the corpse.
