Dwarf Fortress is a pretty realistic game regarding the real-world mechanisms involved, including some of the best corpse and garbage disposal methods. It’s natural for your fortress to accumulate piles of trash and, even worse—corpses. But they can’t just sit around and rot. You’ll have to find a way to get rid of them. Otherwise, it could easily upset your dwarves, and we don’t want that. There are a few options, but either way, you will have to find a way to avoid accumulating trash or even destroy it. Keep reading to learn about the best garbage and corpse disposal methods in Dwarf Fortress.
Dwarf Fortress: Best Garbage and Corpse Disposal Methods
Below is a list of some of the best ways to get rid of garbage and corpses in your fortress:
- Single Dumping Zone
- This is one of the best early-game methods when you don’t have access to many materials or workshops
- Start off with a dumping zone in an area that is not enclosed
- Doesn’t have to be a large location, as it can be enlarged later in the game
- Open the “Zones” menu using the “Z” key to assign this area as a dumping zone for trash and corpses
- Trash Compactor
- This method doesn’t require a ton of maintenance, making it convenient
- Ensure that you have a few mechanisms to use
- Either mine or select the area that you want your dwarves’ trash to be dumped, though the area should have an open area below that can be accessed and is at least a 4×3 space where your compactor will be placed
- Dig a channel from the top level down to the bottom level, then place a bridge that is surrounded by a door and walls on the lower level
- Make sure your bridge opens in the direction of the door
- On the upper level put a pressure plate on the floor on the square that is directly in front of the Garbage Chute
- The pressure plate must be set to reset and be triggered by dwarves or creatures that touch it
- Build a lever in a place that can easily be accessed
- Link the pressure plate and lever to your bridge, and lock the door to the compactor
- Set the squares that contain the chute and pressure plate as a Dumping Zone from the “Zones” menu
