NVIDIA has revealed two powerful new video cards, the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announced and ran through the specs of the two powerhouse cards at Dreamhack on Friday night.
The GTX 1080 runs on NVIDIA’s new Pascal architecture, which allows it to run extremely fast without overheating. Huang claims that the card has twice the performance and three times the efficiency of the Titan X, NVIDIA’s current most powerful card. Huang told the assembled crowd that the GTX 1080 offers “almost irresponsible amounts of performance.” While the performance specs are impressive, the real winner here is the cost.
The Pascal architecture that NVIDIA boasts of in their new card must have a serious effect on card production because the GTX 1080 is significantly less expensive than the card it runs laps around. The Titan X, released in March of 2015, is still difficult to find under $1000. The GTX 1080 will release a “Founder’s Edition” for $699, and the regular retail price will run at $599. It is scheduled to release on May 27th.
In addition to discussing the new, top of the line card, Huang also gave Dreamhack attendees a few other treats. He showcased NVIDIA Ansel, a new game capture software that will attempt to elevate screenshot capturing to new levels. He highlighted the push towards virtual reality, with serious improvements coming towards the VRWorks program. Finally, he announced another new graphics card: the GTX 1070. Running on the same architecture as 1080, this card will offer comparable performance to the Titan X at less than half the cost, retailing at $449. The GTX 1070 is scheduled to release June 10th.
