Although a limited-time feature upon its introduction, Fortnite’s Trios Battle Royale has become one of the most played modes in the title. Due to its player count, developer Epic Games even decided to make it a permanent component in December 2020, allowing players to compete in teams of three anytime they wanted. Shockingly, Trios fans are now discovering that it has vanished from all of the in-game menus once again. Thus, teams not playing Creative 2.0 can choose from only the Solos, Duos, and Squads options. This has left many wondering why Fortnite is removing Trios and if the fan-favorite will be vaulted permanently.

Why Is Fortnite’s Trios Battle Royale Mode Vaulted?

Just hours before update 24.40’s launch, the official Fortnite Status Twitter account revealed that it was getting rid of Trios for the foreseeable future. This takes effect not only in its Battle Royale but also in Zero Builds. As a result, those who now desire to play Trios must head into a Squads match or leave a teammate behind. Alternately, some may opt to head to Creative 2.0 maps that allow for groups of three. Since the announcement, the game’s developer has yet to speak on why it is getting rid of Trios and if it will return as an LTM in the future.

However, the 24.40 update has delivered a brand new Ranked mode for competitive Solos, Duos, and Squads. With this addition, many hypothesized that Fortnite is removing Trios due to it causing possible server issues. For instance, Twitch streamer SypherPK reasoned the “player count could get really split and queue times could get out of hand” if the mode was restored anytime soon.

I know some people are upset about this but with ranked mode coming player count could get really split and queue times could get out of hand. https://t.co/RhHTln0gMi

Fortnite getting rid of Trios should not come as a shock to longtime fans. Despite its high demand, the game has only ever kept track of stats for all other Battle Royale variants. Additionally, the Fortnite Champion Series was revealed to consist of only Duos for the remainder of 2023. Unfortunately, fans will need to wait for more details about Trio’s future. It is unclear when it could potentially come back again, but multiple major updates are coming shortly. One final patch is expected to launch this season, and Chapter 4 Season 3 follows just weeks after in June.

Fortnite is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile.
