At this point, superhero movies get a certain expectation, whether that is positive or negative. Still, we get plenty of refreshing films and shows, like the serious murder mystery of The Batman, the Western-inspired Logan, and the gory comedies of Deadpool movies. According to the director of Thunderbolts, the upcoming Marvel movie will have a story unlike what people are expecting. No story details are mentioned, but it is still an eyebrow-raising tease to get us excited to think outside the box for what the take of this movie.

Thunderbolts Will Have a “Different Perspective” for a Marvel Story

Talking to Collider, director Jake Schreier (Beef) talked about why he chose to helm a project for the MCU. Coming from a music video and TV background, he will make a significant step in his career. The narrative and the “real challenge” of tackling the project were what captured his attention to signing the contract. While talking about his reasons, he says interesting things that suggest whatever we are thinking about this ensemble movie could be wrong.

“It was just a really different approach and a new kind of story to tell amidst that, which I know they’ve had so many things, but it’s not a sequel. Yes, these characters have appeared before, but it is a new story being told and a story, I think, with a very different perspective than maybe people aren’t expecting, and I think that felt exciting and felt like a real challenge worth taking on.”

Hollywood is a small world, which led to an interesting anecdote about his connection to the MCU. The Thunderbolts director was roommates with Jon Watts, the director of the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy, after hearing positive things about working as a director for Marvel and getting a taste as a second unit position in one of the Spider-Man movies caught his attention. Add a strong cast of returning stars and newcomers; Schreier was sold on going into the realm of superhero blockbusters.

Returning stars for the upcoming Marvel movie include Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, and Hannah John-Kamen. Newcomers include Harrison Ford, The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri, and Steven Yeun.

Thunderbolts was gearing up to film earlier this year, but the director and everyone had to stop after the WGA strike. Now it is pushed further due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
