Yesterday, at QuakeCon 2016, the first gameplay for the upcoming Quake Champions was revealed.
Under development at id Software and Sabre Interactive, the multiplayer only title looks to bring the series back to its roots. Although we only got a brief trailer, plenty of gameplay was shown off. The action looks to adhere to the classic ideals of Quake.
Players will sprint and leap through tight, expertly crafted levels, firing off rockets, landing precise railgun shots, and eviscerating enemies with shotgun shells. While the core mechanics appear to be intact, Quake Champions does differ slightly from previous multiplayer modes in the series.
Instead of jumping into the boots of a nameless soldier, players will now select a character with a unique ability. A character was shown teleporting across a gap to secure a kill, while another dropped their shoulder and charged through enemies, leaving bits of viscera in their wake.
As it stands, Quake Champions looks to be a return to form for the series while simultaneously introducing new mechanics to inject even more strategy and skill. The team appears to be focusing on a wide arsenal of explosive weapons, tight, responsive controls, and fantastic map design. The inclusion of rocket jumps is certainly a welcomed inclusion and one that made the game look and feel like classic Quake arena games.
The last full Quake game was Quake IV in 2005. It wasn’t as well receivedย critically as other games in the series due to its lackluster campaign. While the original Quake did have a well-made campaign, the star of the package was undoubtedly the multiplayer, which explains why Quake Champions is a multiplayer only title. It is doubling down on what many consider the best aspect of the series.

Quake Champions was first revealed atย E3 2016. A beta will commence in early 2017, with no definitive release date currently given.
