Mortal Kombat 1 brings the franchise’s iconic roster back to the forefront. They come with a reliable voice cast that ranges from seasoned vets to popular actors and actresses. Fans of Johnny Cage were eager to discover more since news spread about a unique skin available for the beloved character. Let’s break down who exactly will voice Johnny Cage in MK1 and just how the character and the extra skin come into play in the roster.
MK1 Johnny Cage – Double Voice Actors
The MK1 roster is impressive enough, but fans have always enjoyed the extra skins that come with some characters. As is the case with Johnny Cage. His skin is the reason behind having multiple voice actors. Johnny Cage arrives in MK1 with two voice actors listed below:
- Andrew Bowen
- Jean-Claude Van Damme
It’s easy to get confused about why Johnny Cage needs two different voice actors in MK1, but things make sense when you examine the skins. Johnny’s normal skin is where you hear Andrew Bowen. However, the game also has an optional, unique Jean-Claude Van Damme skin for Johnny, and this is where we first hear him in the character trailer NetherRealm released.
Andrew Bowen
Andrew Bowen isn’t new to the acting game. He has numerous credits under his belt from live acting to voice acting and even some directing and writing experience. Most recently, he’s appeared in the likes of Starfield, Monster Hunter: Rise, and Final Fantasy VII Remake.
He’s no stranger to Johnny Cage either as MK1 is not his first rodeo with the character. Bowen also voiced the fictional action star in Mortal Kombat 11, Mortal Kombat X, and Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.
Jean-Claude Van Damme
Jean-Claude Van Damme’s inclusion in MK1 as Johnny Cage is a dream fulfilled. It’s no secret that the Mortal Kombat franchise has a connection with the famous martial artist action star. He inadvertently led to the creation of the franchise when Van Damme turned down an opportunity to star in a proposed arcade game. From there, Ed Boon and John Tobias developed what we know as Mortal Kombat.
After 30 years, and after the fact that Johnny Cage’s first appearance came straight from Van Damme’s 1988 Bloodsport film, we finally have the man in MK1. It’s a delight for fans of the character and of Van Damme as they can battle their way through iconic characters dressed in a classic Van Damme style.
Van Damme’s prolific career is too large to list. However, he’s starred in Bloodsport, Hard Target, Double Impact, Kickboxer, JCVD, Timecop, Maximum Soldier, and plenty more.
