Whether it is coming from new trailers or upcoming releases, horror has been quite violent this Halloween season. That continues as we have images of the killers and new victims of The Strangers: Chapter 1. The film will start a trilogy based on the 2008 cult classic.
Separate from the first two films, this next film will be connected in the same canon while telling a separate story. Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) will direct from a script written by The Freaky Brothers co-creators Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.
Masked Killers of The Strangers Return for Chapter 1 in New Images
The images were released from Entertainment Weekly with an interview with the director of this continuation. The new images of The Strangers: Chapter 1 see two of the masked killers along with two separate pictures of the new victims, Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale) and Froy Gutierrez (Hocus Pocus 2). In the film, they will be joined by Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent), Rachel Shenton (All Creatures Great and Small), Richard Brake (Barbarian), Ella Bruccoleri (Call the Midwife), Ema Horvath (The Rings of Power), Rebecka Johnston (Midsommar), and George Young (Malignant).
The vision for the films is meant to be “a trilogy based on the original film,” as the director did not want a redo that erased the original that he cited as “one of my favorite horror films.” While the original had hints of depth to the killers and where the characters could go, we never got much, even with the blood-thirstier sequel, Prey at Night. The first film will mirror the original in many ways, but Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 will “explore what happens to the victims of this kind of violence and who the perpetrators are.”
While details are sparse on the sequels outside of those core ideas and the images of The Strangers: Chapter 1, the first will sound familiar to fans of the 2008 film. It will follow Petsch as Maya and her fiancé, Ryan (Gutierrez), go on a road trip. Their car breaks down, and they must stay at a secluded Airbnb. This is only the tip of their bad luck as a group of masked people start terrorizing and attacking the young couple.
All three films were shot simultaneously last year. Dates have yet to be set.
