As many players know, Genshin Impact Version 4.2 expands the already impressive Fontaine region. Besides adding new zones and quests, Genshin Impact 4.2 has also added a new Xenochromatic creature. Similar to previous patches, this Xenochromatic creature, the Xenochromatic Octopus, can bestow a unique ability onto players. This ability can then be used to solve puzzles or engage in underwater combat. Despite the similarities, unlike other Xenochromatic abilities, the octopus ability has a few quirks that make it stand out from the others. For players looking to start their Genshin Impact 4.2 adventures, here’s how to use the Xenochromatic Octopus ability.

To use Genshin Impact 4.2’s new Xenochromatic Octopus ability, players must find a Xenochromatic Octopus underwater or a Xenochromatic Octopus Machine on the surface. The player will now have access to the new ability by attacking the creature or interacting with the machine. Once you have the ability, by holding the Elemental Skill key, you can shoot a continuous beam of damage at your target. This beam can dish out a fair amount of damage to aquatic creatures, clean up corruption around the map, move Dew Bubbles, launch Potential Energy Balls, and much more. This ability seems to be an important aspect of the new Genshin patch as a whole.

After observing the strange Xenochromatic Octopus Machines scattered on the new zone’s surface, players may have already figured out one thing that makes this ability peculiar. Unlike other abilities, players can use Genshin Impact 4.2’s new Xenochromatic ability on the surface. To use the Xenochromatic Octopus ability on the surface, players must press the “T” key on PC, to swap between using their Elemental Skill or the new ability. While some players may think this will get in the way of fighting on the surface, the ability should automatically switch to your Elemental Skill when combat begins.

Players shouldn’t struggle to find this ability scattered around the new Genshin Impact Version 4.2 zone, as there seems to be a Xenochromatic Octopus Machine by every puzzle that requires them on the surface. Since almost every puzzle requires them in one form or another, players won’t need to search for long if they need the ability. Due to the sheer number of times players will need to use this ability, it shouldn’t be long before players can master it.
