Sony is Getting Sued Because Its Games Are Too Expensive

It’s coming full circle.

Sony is being sued because it demands “excessive” amounts for its digital content on the PS Store. This issue was initially brought to light in August of last year by a consumer rights campaigner by the name of Alex Neill. But the charges have now stuck, and Sony will have to defend itself in court for a hefty amount totaling almost $7 billion.

According to the original lawsuit, Sony is the reason people are spending millions without being able to afford it. And since the cost of living is skyrocketing, consumers are in a very tough spot, especially when they don’t have any other options other than a few market leaders.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal in the UK has approved the appeal and it can now proceed to trial. This means that Sony’s previous attempts to dismiss this case won’t stand anymore and the company will have to prove why its digital products cost as much as they do.

The odd thing about the lawsuit is that Sony takes a 30% cut like everyone else. This includes Microsoft and Nintendo, yet, neither of them has been involved in the case. Either of the other storefronts could also be referred to as “excessive” as well. And if this case goes in a certain direction that is unfavorable for Sony, other market leaders could be next.

The lawsuit does not need anyone to sign up or anything of the sort, but people can opt out of it if they wish. Anyone who has spent money on the PS Store between August 2019 to August 2022 is included in the case. If the case is a success, affected consumers could get anywhere from $80 to $700 depending on how much they spent on the store during the stipulated period.

But keep in mind that this case could take years before it comes to fruition. Lawsuits like this take a very long time to get settled, and Microsoft’s case regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is a prime example of that fact.
