A new werewolf is biting audiences in 2024. Poor Things star Christopher Abbott has replaced Ryan Gosling as the lead in Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man remake. The horror film is set to be released on October 25, 2024. The plot and other casting details are under wraps. Christopher Abbott Replaces Ryan Gosling in Leigh Whannell’s Upcoming Wolf Man Remake
The news originally came from The Hollywood Reporter, which has confirmed the casting replacement, the date, and some switches that happened that led to the writer-director back in the director’s chair. Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cianfrance came in after the Invisible Man director stepped away in 2021 after initially being attached.
It is unknown exactly what transpired to lead to Christopher Abbott taking on the lead role away from the Barbie star for Wolf Man. The Blade Runner actor was set for the role for about three years before things shifted for the director and his spot as the lead. The ex-lead actor will still have an executive producer credit.
The Blumhouse and Universal remake script has a collection of writers who have touched it. Leigh Whannel wrote Wolf Man with co-writers Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum, and Rebecca Angelo taking credit.
Wolf Man could be a major step up for Christopher Abbott. He has made a name for himself in the indie space with Poor Things, which is up for multiple Golden Globes; Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor in 2020 and was with Tom Holland in the series The Crowded Room. He also starred in the HBO series Girls, Kid Cudi’s Entergalactic, Damien Chazelle’s First Man, and the 2017 horror film It Comes at Night.
