Emma Stone has died and gets brought back to life in the trailer for Poor Things, which Searchlight Pictures released today (seen below). This is the latest film from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), who continues his strange style with this upcoming sci-fi flick. It will hit theaters on September 8.
The trailer for Poor Things does not give away too much in its plot during these 34 seconds. We get a sense of its unique visual language with stunning sets and visual effects. The story will follow Bella Baxter (Stone), who gets brought back from the dead by Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). The two leads are joined by Mark Ruffalo, Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood), Christopher Abbott (Possessor), Charlie Hiscock (Ted Lasso), Kathryn Hunter (Andor), and Ramy Youssef (Ramy).
Poor Things Trailer Sees Emma Stone Resurrected
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker reunites with writer Tony McNamara, who penned the Oscar-winning film The Favourite. The story of this oddball sci-fi film is based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. The director produces with the lead star, Ed Guiney, Ildiko Kemeny, Andrew Lowe, Kasia Malipan, David Minkowski, and Mónika Nagy.
While filling in time with short films, the Poor Things trailer gives a taste of Lanthimos’ first feature-length project since 2018’s The Favourite. It reunites him with his lead star as she starred in The Favourite and his short film Vlihi. His other notable works include The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Lobster.
The trailer for Poor Things sets up a busy time for Emma Stone. She is preparing to reprise her role as Cruella in the self-titled film’s sequel. She will join Nathan Fielder for his next series, The Curse. The star will rejoin The Lobster filmmaker for AND. That film will have a stacked cast with Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau (The Whale), Qualley, Hunter Schaefer (Euphoria), and Mamoudou Athie (Archive 81).
