Growing up, every kid was infatuated with race cars at one point or another, partly as a result of the ease with which parents could buy car toys in all shapes and sizes for reasonable prices. Even in the modern technologically driven age, race cars are more popular than ever, and one of my personal favorites is getting an entire video devoted towards it – titled GRIP.
The design in question is the simplistic, flat centered car that is dwarfed by the four wheels, making it unflippable. Just like racecar spelled forwards or backwards, these rollcage-like cars are identical upside down and frontside up.
While the premise of GRIP and the semi anti-gravity, skyline racer genre isn’t entirely new – with Wipeout, F-Zero and Roll Cage paving the way – the trailer shows the game takes a unique, yet simplistic style in regards to these cult racing games. Tight spaces and quick 180 perspective changes, flipping the camera’s axis if driving on an oval room’s ceiling, create a challenging way to race and a possible way of besting the competition.
Similar to other racing games – Mario Kart being the best comparison – GRIP contains two different modes of play. The first style of play being the simple passive race, and the second adding different weapons and abilities to be picked up throughout the map.

As with any form of modern entertainment, the soundtrack is vital to creating the atmosphere for this perspective switching racing game. The game’s music is done by Full Kontakt, which is actually the name of the trailer, highlighting just how important the score is to the full GRIP experience.
GRIP is now available for purchase on Steam Early Access. For more information head over to their Steam page and be sure to stay tuned to The Nerd Stash for any more news!
