League of Legends MMO Back To Square One, Likely Going Dark For Several Years

Better late than never.

The upcoming League of Legends MMO game that fans were anticipating is not canceled, but just underwent an internal creative reset. This means that the game is even further away than before, and has been started from scratch. Looks like fans will have to wait a while before they get an MMO in the LoL universe.

This was announced by the co-creator of League of Legends, Mark Merrill on X (formerly Twitter), who says that the direction of the game was changed a while ago so that fans don’t end up with something derivative. He doesn’t want League of Legends players to have yet another generic MMO with a Runeterra coat of paint.

Although not easy, this decision was made because the project was too similar to games that are already available on the market. The goal of the developers is to make a game that not only fits into the genre but pushes it forward as well.

The game was originally revealed 3 years ago and was being directed by Gregg Street, who is a World of Warcraft veteran. He then left the studio along with other Riot employees. This led fans to believe that the League of Legends MMO was in trouble, and they were partly right.

Merrill went on to reveal that Fabrice Condominas is now working on the MMO, who previously worked for EA and BioWare. But he ended this by saying that people shouldn’t expect any updates about the game for a while. The team will be heads down focusing on the game and will reveal more information when it’s ready.

Riot Games decided years ago to make multiple games in different genres in the League of Legends universe. The first fruit of this labor was Teamfight Tactics, and the next big one that is coming out sometime soon is Project L, aka 2XKO, which is a 2v2 fighting game. The company has also worked with other studios to make different kinds of games in the League universe including The Mage Seeker and Ruined King.
