Last year, Legendary released the best Godzilla movie to date (American or otherwise). The success of which spurred Toho, the company that owns Big-G, to setting into motion the beginnings of a new “official” movie. Since then, there hasn’t been too much news. On March 31st, however, in what can only be described as “The Best News Ever”, Toho has announced that Hideaki Anno will be the writer/director and Shinji Higuchi will be the SFX director for their new Godzilla movie.
Hideaki Anno, for those that don’t know, is the director for Neon Genesis Evangelion. Most recently, Anno has been involved with the new Evangelion movies (Evangelion 3.0: You Can(Not) Redo). Shinji Higuchi, who got his SFX start at Toho in the 1980s, is heading the special effects for the live-action Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan).
Filming for this new movie will begin in the Fall, and Anno is already well on his way into writing the script. As an added bonus, Toho revealed an image of the bottom of Big-G’s foot. Along with the reveal, it was said that this incarnation is going to be the biggest, baddest King of the Monsters to date. Even bigger than Kaneko and Legendary’s iterations.
The film is slated to premier next year. Personally, my poor little irradiated heart can’t bear the wait.
