Winter is officially coming…this summer, as the penultimate season for HBO’s Game of Thrones officially has a released date. The network revealed during a facebook live event that the Emmy-winning fantasy hit will return on July 16th for its seventh season.

The announcement was accompanied by a teaser titled sigils, filled with the symbols of each house overlaid with important event relevant to each that have occurred throughout the series.

Similarly to the contents of Game of Throne’s fourth (A Feast for Crows) and fifth book (A Dance with Dragons) – as George R.R Martin originally intended to have them as one book, but added a lot more information – the final 14 episodes will be split in half at 7 episodes a piece, 3 episodes less than usual. The release date is further back than usual, as almost every other season has first aired in April, with season 3 airing in march.

The reason behind this can be attributed to the fact that the series has actually passed, and for the most part diverted, from the book series. While a fair amount of the plot lines are similar, and Martin has told David Benioff and D.B Weiss how it ends, the vast majority of scenes that will fill the final two seasons will either come from the unreleased Winds of Winter plot lines or will be of the showrunners creation.

The Greyjoys are one of many characters whose paths will differ from the books

Even though the show will be coming to an end soon, there are talks of a potential prequel series in the works based on the world created by Martin – fingers crossed for a Dunk and Egg series. Either way, the show has officially entered uncharted territory, south of the wall of knowledge established by the books.
