Bomberman games are known primarily for their grid-based levels and plus-shaped explosions. Most games in the titular character’s repertoire adhere to this formula, but there are a few that deviate to full 3D environments. The N64 games, as well as several on the Gamecube and Wii, stand among those boasting the third dimension. By and large, however, Bomberman 64: The Second Attack is easily one of the very best. It includes one of the better (and darker) stories, optional cooperative mode, and a wide multitude of different bombs and puzzles. Besides, for the purposes of speedrunning, who wants to sit around and watch a guy blowing up stationary blocks on a grid? Didn’t think so. So enough talking, let’s get this party started.

While returning from vacation, Bomberman’s ship is pulled into a wormhole, and the hero is swiftly captured by the BHB army. He escapes with the help of newfound sidekick Pommy and immediately begins blowing the evildoers to kingdom come. In this particular case, very quickly. Stay tuned, because Bomberman’s problems go from galactic to quite literally demonic. Livelyraccoon’s weapon of choice is the wind bomb, due to it being the safest and its ability to propel the player across the room. Fun fact, this runner holds first place for both “Bomberman 64” games, and both this and the 120 card run of the other game are an hour and 19 minutes long.

Admittedly, speedrunning a Bomberman game is a little like eating a cake but leaving the icing untouched – said icing being the multiplayer. Second Attack comes with several stages and play modes for up to four players to blow each others’ faces off. Ironically, there’s even a speedrun category for the multiplayer (albeit against stupid CPU-controlled opponents).

Falling behind on Speedrun Fast? The last episode featured a dragon% run of fantasy RPG Dragon’s Dogma. It won’t take more than an hour and a half of your time.
