Boomers Rejoice as Age of Mythology: Retold Returns This Fall

The Titans are back

Whenever I see a franchise I played over 20 years ago, I can’t help but feel that sixth sense that tells me I’m old. I usually get backache, or my knees will start shaking to remind me that it’s been over a decade since I played something. Still, I’m glad I’ve lived long enough to see the official release date of Age of Mythology: Retold. Which, believe it or not, is closer than we think. Plus, it is bringing that titanic destruction we all loved from the original RTS classics.

Age of Mythology: Retold โ€“ Xbox Games Showcase 2024

As seen on the Xbox Games Showcase, Age of Mythology: Retold is coming on September 4, 2024. This adds another game to the already packed Fall season of this year. While Age of Empires became a genre staple, Age of Mythology was another prominent and influential RTS game of the 2000s. And now, almost 22 years later, it is almost unbelievable to see it under a new modern spotlight.

While 2024 is looking busier every day, this game is the one at the top of my wishlist. Beyond bringing everything we saw in the original installments, it seems the studios behind this “retelling” aren’t sticking to a simple remaster or remake. The official website mentions a new playable God coming at launch, accompanied by two new pantheons, including a Chinese-inspired one. Frankly, I would be happy with the original things from Age of Mythology. However, the new additions sound great, and I can’t wait to see how they play next to other classical units.

With the release date a few months away, there’s still plenty of time to see what this new iteration is all about. The announcement also mentions a mix of gameplay that caters to old and new players. While this should be reason enough to make me nervous, it isn’t. Age of Empires 4 proved to be a great modern game that didn’t lose its classical feeling. On the contrary, it appealed to all types of players. With that in mind, I’m confident Age of Mythology: Retold will deliver. As long as I can kick some titanic butt with good old Kronos, I’m sold.
