If you’re getting Fire Giant flashbacks, don’t worry. You’re not the only one. Furnace Golems are Shadow of the Erdtree‘s answer to Elden Ring‘s original flaming, stompy boy. FromSoftware sure knows how to make them big and angry. There are a couple of big differences between these two hulking opponents, however. Furnace Golems are much easier to kill than Fire Giant, which is a blessing since you’ll find the Golems just wandering around the open world. Grab your biggest bonking stick and get ready to deliver Malenia’s justice. Here’s how to beat Furnace Golems in Shadow of the Erdtree.
Shadow of the Erdtree Furnace Golem Guide
Like Elden Ring‘s Trolls, Furnace Golems are perfectly capable of deleting you from the Land of Shadow if you aren’t careful. You’ll also find at least two varieties of them: one with rope-wrapped legs, the other with armored ones. As you can guess, the armored version can take far more of a beating, being immune to leg-based staggers. Here are some general tips to make the fight easier:
- Take advantage of Torrent’s mobility by staying mounted
- Torrent’s double-jump makes dodging AoE attacks much easier
- Staying behind the Furnace Golem denies its arm swipe attack
- Furnace Golem’s high health and resistances reduce the effectiveness of effects like Bleed and Poison, so leave them at home
You deal much more damage to a Furnace Golem’s masked face than its legs, but it’s usually too high off the ground to hit with melee weapons. You can either use ranged attacks such as spells or a bow to hit its face or attack its legs until it falls. You’ll need to stagger the Furnace Golem three times to take it to the ground, at which point you can strike its mask for critical damage. Hefty Fire Pots and Hefty Furnace Pots do enormous damage, but only when thrown into their basket.
Furnace Golem Attack
Furnace Golems have a variety of attacks. As with most enemies in Shadow of the Erdtree, positioning is usually the key to countering them. Here are the Furnace Golem’s attacks (and how to counter them):
Attack | Description | Counter Method |
Stomp | Furnace Golem raises a foot and stomps down, creating a large AoE fire blast | Jump over the initial fire blast just as the foot hits the ground. If you’re farther away, you’ll need to delay your jump slightly. |
Swipe | The boss swipes at you with its arm, incinerating anything in the way | Use Torrent to escape behind its legs, using the opportunity to counterattack before the boss recovers |
Slam | Furnace Golem jumps, causing a massive AoE blast when it lands | Keep your distance from the boss to avoid the local explosion and jump to avoid the large AoE |
Eruption | The boss creates a volcanic magma spray | Keep your distance when the boss begins charging this attack, then avoid the magma projectiles |
Flame | Furnace Golem creates jets of fire from its hands, scorching the area | Use Torrent to escape behind the boss or far enough away that the attack misses |
Fighting a Furnace Golem in Shadow of the Erdtree is a marathon, not a sprint. Steel yourself for a battle of attrition, avoid their fiery strikes, and you’re one step closer to conquering the Land of Shadow.
