Amazingly, Someone Has Remade The Entirety of Final Fantasy 7 in Little Big Planet 2

That’s one Midgar-sized project

Anyone who’s played through Final Fantasy 7 Remake knows it isn’t a small game. It is an overwhelming challenge to take the entirety of the worlds that were originally developed for the PlayStation 1, and convert them to the standards that players have come to relate to modern gaming. Now, try imagining building the entirety of the classic game using exclusively Little Big Planet 2’s engine.

Final Fantasy 7 superfan Jamie Colliver has dedicated the last three and a half years to tackling the remake using the Little Big Planet 2 in-game engine. Considering how the latter is played, fans will experience a platforming adventure complete with favorite characters and dialogue taken straight from the original game.

The above gameplay showcases Cloud and other characters during popular moments in the original game, including riding the motorcycle and witnessing Aerith’s fate. The developer also added other elements for better immersion, including Materia, NPCs, vehicles, a score, and more. Lastly, players will be able to engage in combat to some extent as they progress through, reliving all of the iconic battles once again.

Colliver’s work doesn’t end here, however. He’s spearheading a petition to share the project with Square Enix and see if they will feature it as a mini-game in Part 3 of the Remake trilogy. The most recent installment to the trilogy, Rebirth, included many mini-games that weren’t previously featured. The third installment may include just as many mini-games, and having the entirety of the original game playable as a mini-game would be perfect.

Of course, the project’s engine is a problem. The petition doesn’t state whether, should Square Enix respond, he will recreate the project using a different engine since it’s unlikely that they would allow using the Little Big Planet 2 one. Regardless, it’s an overwhelming undertaking, and as a fellow Final Fantasy 7 fan, I hope I can play it someday.
