Good morning, Angels. I’m sorry to call you back from retirement, but we’ve got a movie that just can’t wait. Meet Elizabeth Banks. She’s a director, and in two short years, she’ll be your director, when her new movie, the Charlie’s Angels reboot, goes public.

Arriving on June 7, 2019, the film is being produced by Sony Pictures, with writing by Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro from Narcos. Casting for the Angels themselves has yet to begin, though the studio hopes to snag Janelle Monae for one of them. Thus far, names are the only tidbits to find, as the really juicy stuff like the plot is currently nowhere to be found.

Charlie's Angels

Charlie’s Angels began as a TV crime drama in 1976. It lasted until 1981 and saw five seasons that totaled 110 episodes. Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and David Doyle appeared as Sabrina, Jill, Kelly, and Bosley respectively. Fawcett was lauded as one of the series’s key actresses, but left the show after only the first season, to be replaced by Cheryl Ladd as Kris. The first Charlie’s Angels movie, which hit in 2002, spawned a sequel subtitled Full Throttle, before the television show itself was rebooted in 2011. Unfortunately, the show received mostly negative reviews centered around the casting and lackluster writing. The show was declared canceled after only four episodes, and only aired eight of them, with only seven coming to the U.S.

The movies saw noticeably more success. While they didn’t reach critical acclaim, they were a big hit at the box office, with the first flick being the more popular of the two (as is always the case. Like, with every movie, ever. Sarcasm). Director Banks gained steam for bringing the Pitch Perfect moviesย into the spotlight, and also for being Rita Repulsa in Power Rangers, so here’s hoping she can take this defunct franchise out for another fun romp. There are reboots everywhere in Hollywood these days, but this one’s sporting tight leather instead of spandex.
