Spider-man fans were surprised when it was announced that Venom would be getting its own standalone movie and even more so when Tom Hardy was cast in the leading role. Now, it’s been revealed that the main antagonist for the film will be none other than Carnage.

In the comics, the two villains have a storied history, both as symbiotes and as former cell mates in prison. Eddie Brock (Venom) and serial killer Cletus Kasady (Carnage) met in their cell at Ryker’s Island prison.

Not only are they both symbiotes though, when Brock escape the prison using his symbiote’s abilities, part of it broke off and attached to Kasady and thus Carnage was born.  Carnage’s powers include shapeshifting, physical strength – more than Venom and Spider-Man combined – and the ability to place thoughts into people’s minds.

Despite the rights of the film belonging to Sony, there have been inklings that a crossover with Marvel’s Spider-Man is on the horizon. The Hollywood Reporter has stated that the plan is to bring Tom Holland and his spidey suit into the spinoff films, as well as bringing Venom and maybe Carnage into other Marvel films.

This theory supports the back and forth that the movie – despite being a Sony product – will be a part of the MCU, but there are also plenty of contradictions to that news as well. It’s not impossible though, as the two brands have already worked together on the Deadpool franchise, whose success proves that a partnership between the two is mutually beneficial.

Venom is set to open in theaters on October 5, 2018, while Spider-Man: Homecoming will be out a bit sooner, opening in theaters on July 7. For more information on Venom and other Marvel/Sony updates be sure to check back to the site frequently for all of your Nerdy News and Needs!
