Earlier back in late October 2024, Nightingale developer studio, Inflexion Games had to close its UK office due to the early access game’s poor financial performance. Now, it appears Inflexion is in more trouble after its main Canada office laid off over 50 people. This recent round of layoffs has reduced the headcount in Inflexion Games’ Canada office to around 58 employees according to certain sources.
The report came from GamesIndustry where several sources have spoken to them about the matter. Inflexion Games has also confirmed via a LinkedIn post that they have laid off 65 employees since last month. They are also networking with other development studios to help the laid-off employees with their job search.
The layoffs were part of the Canadian government’s redundancy rounds, which is why they had to let go of dozens of redundant employees. Some of the employees laid off comprise whole teams, while others are from QA, concept art, and narrative divisions.
According to unnamed sources, Inflexion reportedly made the laid-off employees sign an agreement that they couldn’t say anything derogatory about the company. Otherwise, their full severance would be withheld.
Inflexion Games Also Gave a Statement
Meanwhile, GamesIndustry reached out to Inflexion for a company statement where the spokesperson stated the following:
“Our affected team members have received the notice they are entitled to based on their individual employment agreements. Additional compensation was also offered to all those individuals. As is common practice in Canada, this additional compensation comes with some standard requirements, which include agreeing to maintain confidentiality and returning company equipment.
This is an unfortunate situation for any company to be facing and is a sad and stressful time for everyone involved. To further support impacted team members, all affected employees will continue to receive their healthcare benefits through the end of November, and we have proactively enrolled all those involved in an employee assistance program to offer further support to them through this difficult time.”
In Inflexion Games’ LinkedIn post regarding the layoffs, other Canadian developers such as Digital Extremes (Warframe developers) even offered vacant positions. Some of their positions are even remote.
This recent round of layoffs appears to be part of the bigger struggle that Inflexion Games is facing. The studio had to restructure late in October, which resulted in the aforementioned shutdown of its UK office. Long-term sustainability was cited as one of the main reasons for such a difficult decision.
It’s worth noting that former BioWare developers form the bulk of Inflexion Games’ employees. The survival-crafting RPG, Nightingale was their debut project. Sadly, Nightingale‘s early access release was somewhat polarizing for many players. Since then the Inflexion games have been working with player-feedback to improve the game.
