EVE Vanguard’s “Grounded” Event Will Rewrite New Eden’s Future for The First Time

When CCP Games unveiled EVE Online’s FPS spin-off, Vanguard, its vision was that actions in one game would have consequences in the other –and today, it’s delivering on that promise. A limited-time event for the in-development shooter called YC126.11.28 Groundbreak, running from November 28 to December 9, is set to reshape EVE Online’s universe tangibly for the first time. It’s billed as the largest of its kind in gaming history.

Participants in the event will enter EVE Vanguard through its “Groundbreak” phase, engaging in insurgency battles that blend ground skirmishes with orbital warfare, commanding artillery cannons to bombard enemy fleets from the planet’s surface. These 9v9 battles allow players to align with their chosen faction, shaping territorial control and airspace dominance in real time. Success on the ground means strengthening a faction’s grip in the wider EVE universe.

As alluded to above, the vision for EVE Vanguard has always been a persistent experience where no server resets will wipe away progress. Every battle, resource harvested, or mission completed will have a ripple effect across the wider EVE experience. Bergur Finnbogason, the game’s Creative Director, reminded us of the team’s ambition in a press release sent to The Nerd Stash:

“EVE Vanguard will grow into a platform where players can experience unlimited possibilities in a persistent universe. By connecting ground combat with the vast conflicts of New Eden, we’re creating more than just a lobby shooter– we’re building an ecosystem where every player’s story becomes part of a greater narrative.”

Certainly, for long-time fans of EVE Online and newcomers alike, EVE Vanguard represents an ambitious extension of the EVE universe, promising dynamic gameplay that blends FPS intensity with MMO depth. It was, of course, the same vision that fuelled the development of Dust 514 which EVE Vanguard is very much a successor to. This time, however, the limitations of mid-2000s technology shouldn’t hold it back.

The upcoming playtest will be a chance to experience exactly what CCP Games hopes the future of New Eden becomes.

If you’re curious about jumping in, you can request access codes via the official EVE Vanguard Discord to join the action. You can check out the game’s previously announced roadmap for a further look at what’s to come.
