Nobody can avoid that after a video game has some acceptance or even a popularity boom, companies will try to replicate that same success. This benefits everyone because companies can focus on creating something unique, and existing ones strive to improve due to competition. However, the problem starts when there are so many similar games that the market becomes oversaturated. In the case of FragPunk, its trailer shows a shooter in which you activate cards with special effects. However, it is not evident if this feature really provides value compared to similar games.
During The Game Awards, a new FragPunk trailer appeared, initially showing that this game is well-action-packed because of its “trick cards.” The cards might be odd initially, but they add that unique twist to the gameplay. Some will allow players to place automatic machine guns to shoot their rivals, rotate the world to walk on the ceiling, or buffs that make it easier to shoot opponents, like turning their heads into gigantic ones. In practice, it sounds interesting, and it’s always good to give other video games a try; you never know what hidden gems you might find.
However, the main question is whether this feature will be significant enough for FragPunk to survive among giants like Valorant and Overwatch. And worse enough, they might even repeat the story as Concord‘s. Not that I’m wishing for that to happen, but the sea of hero co-op shooters is full of bigger fish. Even with so many options, players generally prefer to stick to the most popular games instead of exploring the wide variety of choices that don’t last long enough. Let’s see if FragPunk manages to convince the masses with this trailer, and let’s see how well it takes off among the dozens of shooters already available.
