Whoopi Goldberg sees nothing wrong with Carrie Underwood performing at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the talk show host addressed the topic during the latest episode of The View. While many fans have criticized the singer for agreeing to participate in the event, Goldberg thinks Underwood should do whatever she wants.
Whoopi Goldberg Defends Carrie Underwood Amid Donald Trump Backlash
“I stand behind her,” Whoopi Goldberg said. “If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform some place, I believe [she has] the same right. I have to support.”
Despite this, Goldberg revealed she won’t be tuning into Underwood’s performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony. “I won’t be watching,” she said. “But that’s just me.”
This isn’t surprising, considering Goldberg has repeatedly criticized Trump for years. In fact, she even refuses to say his name on The View. Whenever he’s brought up during the show, Goldberg only refers to him as “he” or “you-know-who.”
Trump doesn’t appear to be a big fan of Goldberg’s, either. After Kamala Harris appeared on The View last year, Trump called the Sister Act star and her co-hosts “really dumb people” for deciding to interview her. He even singled out Goldberg by calling one of her past comedy shows “filthy, dirty,” and “disgusting.”
Goldberg and Trump clearly doesn’t see eye to eye. However, the EGOT winner isn’t letting her personal feelings about the politician sway her opinion of Underwood. The same can’t be said for other fans of the country music star.
Carrie Underwood Responds to the Criticism
After Underwood’s performance was announced on Monday, Jan. 13, the singer received a flood of negative comments on social media for supporting Trump. Following the backlash, the American Idol alumn released a statement explaining she agreed to perform since it was too big of an opportunity to pass up.
“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” she said, according to Variety. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
When Is Donald Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony?
