Timothée Chalamet relived his days on one of his most beloved movies during his latest appearance on Saturday Night Live, thrilling SNL viewers with three songs by Bob Dylan. The actor, who played Dylan in the James Mangold musical drama A Complete Unknown dug into the legendary singer’s archive to unearth some of his lesser-known tracks this week. Making his SNL musical appearance this weekend, the star performed these top picks, shocking most fans who expected more popularized songs like Every Grain of Sand, or perhaps, a beautiful selection from the 2024 biological musical drama where he portrayed the legendary singer.

Prior to taking the mic during the musical segment, the 29-year-old hinted at his unusual choices, telling the audience they may not recognize the songs he wanted to perform. Despite not being some of the most listened-to Bob Dylan Songs, Timothée Chalamet admitted on SNL that the three choices represented his personal favorites. He quipped,

“You might not know the Bob Dylan songs I’m performing, but they’re my personal favorites. I’m so grateful Saturday Night Live is still doing weird stuff like this 50 years in. They’re either really nice for letting me do this or incredibly mean and this is all a big prank.”

After his introduction by SNL veteran Adam Sandler, Timothée Chalamet received a surprise of his own as guest James Blake joined them, manning the keyboard. Clad in his retro winter coat, hood, and sunglasses, the actor opted to perform in his own voice rather than do a sing-along to a pre-recorded Bob Dylan song. Already endearing the audience with his move, the Dune star proceeded to perform Outlaw Blues and Three Angels from the albums Bringing It All Back Home (1965) and New Morning (1970), respectively.

After this first segment, Timothée Chalamet ushered in another musical moment featuring him on acoustic guitar for the track Tomorrow Is a Long Time, reviving yet another of Bob Dylan’s songs nearly lost in time. Notably, the musical legend debuted the track in 1962, but only had it released officially nine years later as part of the compilation album Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Vol. II, which dropped in 1971.

Much like this final performance on Saturday Night Live, the other two tracks Timothée chose have rarely been performed publicly by the legendary singer. In fact, Bob did his only-ever live performance of the track, Outlaw Blues on September 20, 2007, in Nashville decades after its 1965 release per his official website. Meanwhile, no record of a live performance of Three Angels exists, proving just how deeply Timothée Chalamet revered his Bob Dylan fandom. It’s no wonder the actor easily became the top pick to play the music legend in the 2024 biographical musical A Complete Unknown, which scored eight Oscar nods.
