I Did the Unthinkable and Nuked My Wishlist, and I’m Glad I Did

There’s freedom in letting go

I wish I could say it was easy deleting my wishlists, but it wasn’t. It was kind of scary. All those games I wanted to play or was the least bit interested in are now gone. After the anxiety passed, I realized I’m glad I did. Having a wishlist was a constant reminder of the passage of time. Why did I do it? Well, it’s like when someone gets a new haircut—to start fresh.

I’m well aware that a wishlist is meant to grow, but you’re also meant to work at it and I wasn’t. Not very fast, anyway. I think I may have checked off three, maybe four games on my list in 2024, out of dozens. And it just keeps growing!

I can’t keep up with it, and as I took a look at everything on there, I wondered why and when it was I added these to my list. Many I took a second look at and decided they weren’t worth my time or may have piqued my interest before but my tastes outgrew them.

It wouldn’t be a meme if it wasn’t true, but my game libraries (especially Steam) are teeming with games I bought on sale and haven’t gotten to yet, like Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (which has stellar VO by Simon Templeman). I think it’s about time I actually start playing these games, you know? I’ve made it my mission to be the first Steam user to clear their game library.

On that note, I’ve been in the mood to revisit many of the games I’ve already played, too. I’m on another playthrough of Final Fantasy IV and Baldur’s Gate 3 (my ultimate comfort zone). Honestly, it’s made me content in my era of JOMO.

Lastly, both Game Pass and PlayStation Plus have been acting as a steady drip feed for new games. In fact, a couple that I remember from my list came with my subscriptions, like Pathfinder, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Disco Elysium. It pays to be a patience gamer, and many of the games I got to play I’ll end up picking up a physical copy of down the road, just to have.

To be frank, there are so many games out there, I’d rather pick something on a whim than stick to a set of arbitrary goals. It starts to feel more like a to-do list than something to get excited about. Chances are I’ll come across those forgotten games again and, if the mood strikes, I’ll give them a try then.
