Cate Blanchett wants to return to a time when Hollywood protected its A-listers’ privacy at award shows. The sensational actress recently addressed the invasive nature of today’s media, reflecting on a period when celebrities enjoyed more freedom. She shared her thoughts on Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang’s Las Culturistas podcast.ย

Blanchett stressed that stars had a few places to enjoy privacy today. She felt the media’s invasion was worse at award shows, noting their every action was being watched, filmed, and televised. “That’s what I loved about the late ’80s, going to all of the dance parties in Sydney for Mardi Gras. People were just there,” she reminisced.

“They were so present, you know, they were just together, collectively, having a great time. It was non-aggressive. No one was being recorded. No one cared what anyone did,” Blanchett continued. She doubled down on award shows needing more privacy after Yang revealed “lip readers” could reveal celebrities’ private conversations, per Variety.

Blanchett was shocked to learn that people dedicated their time to lip-reading what stars said on the red carpet. She believed the public could do better things with their time, advising them to learn valuable skills like “Ikebana.” Her words referenced “kadล” or “the way of flowers,” which is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, per Wikipedia.

Still on the subject of the media’s invasion, Blanchett wished award shows would no longer be televised. Although she described her thoughts as “blasphemy,” the actress hoped to return to the days of fun. She noted showrunners should bring back the time when celebrities could have “a great party” and “just let go.”

Blanchett was happy to keep the red carpet public, noting the fashion aspect was great. However, fans could learn about who won and didn’t win an award after the show. “It would be so nice that that happened behind closed doors. Absolutely a very different evening,” she raved.

A year before her plea for privacy at award shows, Blanchett starred in the movie adaptation of Borderlands. We covered the story, reporting that she and other famous stars brought the popular video game to life. In a first look at the star-studded cast, the actress was seen rocking the costume of her character Lilith.

Also dressed like their video game counterparts were Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis and Kevin Hart as Roland. The cast continued with Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Jack Black as Claptrap. The movie follows Lilith’s journey to her home planet, Pandora, searching for the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramirez).

However, her mission turned out to be more than she bargained for. Blanchett joined the live-action project in 2020, while the rest of the cast followed in 2021. Eli Roth directed and co-wrote the film with Joe Crombie. Production started in April 2021, and concluded in Hungary that summer.

Are there more stars like Cate Blanchett who wish for privacy during award shows?
