Elon Musk‘s chapter as a “special government employee” in Donald Trump‘s regime is reportedly nearing its conclusion. The tech mogul earned the unique status following his pal’s return to the Oval Office in January. The honor exempted Musk from some ethics and conflict-of-interest rules for 130 days. The grace period is expected to expire in late May or early June, concluding Musk’s days as a special government employee. However, many feared Trump would find a way to blow past the 130-day time limit.
Surprisingly, the POTUS is ready for his pal to step back and take on a more supportive role. One senior administration official claimed Musk would likely transition from his current role as governing partner to an informal role. They suspected the billionaire would take up positions like an adviser to remain a frequent face around the White House. Another agreed, noting Musk’s relationship with Trump wasn’t over. They added that anyone who believes the pair had fallen out was “fooling themselves,” per Politico.
Donald Trump Hinted at Elon Musk’s White House Exit
Trump has been vocal about the billionaire stepping down from his role, dropping hints about his exit. An insider claimed the POTUS confirmed his pal would transition out of administration during a March 24 Cabinet meeting. A senior administration official echoed similar sentiments about the president’s transition statements.
Trump reportedly invited reporters and cameras in for the tail end of the meeting after making the announcement. He hailed Musk as a “patriot” and thanked him for his consistent support. Most recently, on Monday night, the politician addressed his pal’s transition in a conversation with the press, saying:
“At some point, Elon’s going to want to go back to his company. He wants to. I’d keep him as long as I could keep him.”
White House spokesperson Harrison Fields echoed similar sentiments on Tuesday, noting Trump would love to keep Musk by his side. “Elon has been instrumental in executing the President’s agenda and will continue this good work until the President says otherwise,” Fields said.
Elon Musk Implied He Would Leave After Accomplishing His Goals
Last month, Musk addressed his possible transition while speaking to Fox News’ Bret Baier. The reporter asked if the tech mogul would be ready to leave when his special government employee status expired. The SpaceX founder noted his exit would follow the achievement of his goals, saying:
“I think we will have accomplished most of the work required to reduce the deficit by $1 trillion within that time frame.”
Musk’s possible transition from power comes over a month after Trump defended their friendship. We covered the story, reporting the POTUS slammed the media’s attempt to cause a rift in their bromance. During a February interview, Trump stressed that there was no bad blood between Musk and him.
He slammed the mainstream media for spreading tales of a broken bond, noting, “It’s just so obvious. They’re so bad at it. I used to think they were good at it.” Trump added that he wouldn’t have become president if the media were good at spreading false information.
