Green Day’s Coachella performance got political. While taking the main stage on Saturday, April 12, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong dissed Donald Trump with a brutal lyric change in “American Idiot,” criticizing the politician’s Make America Great Again movement. The moment sparked a debate among fans about whether the band should have brought politics into their performance.

Green Day’s Coachella Performance Shaded Donald Trump’s MAGA Movement

The controversial moment happened at the start of Green Day’s Coachella performance. The band opened their headlining set with their 2004 hit single “American Idiot.” Instead of singing “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda,” Armstrong changed the line to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda.”

The musician brought up politics again later during the group’s performance of “Jesus of Suburbia.” He referenced the Israel-Palestine conflict by tweaking one of the song’s last lines. Instead of singing “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised,” Armstrong sang, “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine.”

Green Day’s Coachella set received a mixed reaction from fans online. Some felt the band should have left politics out of their performance. However, others praised them for using their platform to raise awareness about current world issues. Since the lyric changes were guaranteed to spark controversy, one fan applauded Green Day for being brave enough to take the risk despite knowing they would get some backlash. They said the band was “the only ones who had the balls to do anything political” during the festival.

Meanwhile, another fan called Green Day’s performance the “best thing ever.” They found it amusing that some people were getting mad about the lyric changes since the band voicing their opinions is nothing new. After all, “American Idiot” has always been political. The song references the Iraq War, 9/11, and the mass media in America.

Since 2016, Green Day has been using their single as a protest song against Trump. They initially changed their track’s lyrics to criticize his first presidential run. Now that he’s back in office, the group has returned to criticizing him. It’s important to note their Coachella diss comes amid Trump’s tariffs.

They’ll Return to Coachella Next Week

Green Day performed on the main Coachella stage following Charli xcx, T-Pain, Jimmy Eat World, and skrause. Apart from “American Idiot,” their setlist included other fan-favorite hits like “Holiday” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” The band will return to the desert during the second week of Coachella. They’ll perform on Saturday, April 19.

The first weekend of Coachella will run from April 11 to 13. Meanwhile, the second weekend will be from April 18 to 20.
