The controversial moment happened at the start of Green Day’s Coachella performance. The band opened their headlining set with their 2004 hit single “American Idiot.” Instead of singing “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda,” Armstrong changed the line to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda.”
The musician brought up politics again later during the group’s performance of “Jesus of Suburbia.” He referenced the Israel-Palestine conflict by tweaking one of the song’s last lines. Instead of singing “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised,” Armstrong sang, “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine.”
Green Day’s Coachella set received a mixed reaction from fans online. Some felt the band should have left politics out of their performance. However, others praised them for using their platform to raise awareness about current world issues. Green Day performed on the main Coachella stage following Charli xcx, T-Pain, Jimmy Eat World, and skrause. Apart from “American Idiot,” their setlist included other fan-favorite hits like “Holiday” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” The band will return to the desert during the second week of Coachella. They’ll perform on Saturday, April 19.
Lady Gaga, Post Malone, and Travis Scott are also headlining the festival. Other major performers include Missy Elliott, Megan Thee Stallion, and BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Lisa.
The first weekend of Coachella will run from April 11 to 13. Meanwhile, the second weekend will be from April 18 to 20.
