Pete Davidson‘s social media use is non-existent for good reason. During a new interview, the Saturday Night Live comedian opened up about why he chooses to remain offline. While he used to be active on Instagram, Davidson said he quit the platform after it had become too toxic. Since it caused him a lot of anxiety, he compared social media to “the devil” for taking away his “innocence.”

Pete Davidson got real about the downsides of social media in an exclusive for People while talking about his mental health. As someone who has always struggled with anxiety, the star said that trying to distract himself with social media has only made his condition worse. Apart from causing him to avoid face-to-face interactions, the internet has made him suffer from overthinking. Since social media has taken over so much of everybody’s daily lives, Davidson thinks people are better off without it. “I just think social media and the internet in general is the devil,” he said, adding that it has “ruined, you know, the future of humans.”
He admitted it was “scary” and “uncomfortable” to get offline. However, Davidson said it was the best decision he could have made for his mental health. He encouraged others to do the same. “I promise you it’s so worth it to talk to a human and see that there is goodness in the world,” he explained.
An Important Lesson
Limiting his screen use has taught Pete Davidson an important life lesson. Although he once considered himself a people pleaser, the comedian has come to accept that he’ll never be able to satisfy everyone, so he’s stopped trying. After choosing to focus on himself instead, Davidson learned that all he needs in life is his family and friends. “Everybody else can go f*ck themselves,” he said.
Pete Davidson’s inner circle includes his new girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, whom he’s been linked to since March. He also has his mother, Amy Waters Davidson, and his younger sister, Casey Davidson. The Bupkis star was also close to his father, Scott Matthew Davidson, until he died in 2001. Scott was working as a firefighter in New York City when he passed away in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Davidson was just seven years old when he lost his father.
He’s opened up about the tragedy on various occasions throughout his career, explaining that he used humor to cope with his loss. The incident has also inspired Davidson to get involved in charity work. In August 2021, Davidson teamed up with fellow comedian Jon Stewart to host a comedy event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The show was held at Madison Square Garden. It included appearances from Jimmy Fallon, Amy Schumer, Colin Jost, and several other celebrities. Proceeds from the event went toward aiding victims of the 9/11 attacks.
