Music icon Billy Joel‘s year has taken a drastic turn after he was diagnosed with a devastating brain disorder. While his life is not going as he planned, his family is surrounding the singer with full support and positivity. he My Life hitmaker was hit with a life-altering medical diagnosis in May, forcing the singer to cancel all his upcoming scheduled tour dates. The 76-year-old announced to his fans he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus.
The condition occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside or around the brain, disrupting certain functions, according to Johns Hopkins. Typically, the fluid cushions and protects the brain and spinal cord, but too much can lead to NPH. The brain disorder occurs if the normal flow of CSF throughout the brain and spinal cord is blocked in some way. This may be due to past injury, bleeding, infection, brain tumor, or surgery on the brain, and can be linked to alcoholism. However, in many cases, the cause is often not known.
According to the National Enquirer, sources close to Billy Joel state, “Billy hasn’t been well for some time. He’s been stumbling around and acting strangely, and he did fall on stage not too long ago,” an insider confides.
Billy Joel And Family Remain Hopeful
As previously reported, Billy Joel’s health concerns started surfacing in February after the entertainer took a nasty fall during a concert performance at the Mohegan Sun Resort in Stamford, Connecticut.
During his finale, the singer suddenly lost his footing, taking a hard fall onto the stage. He landed flat on his back, bringing forth a horrifying gasp from the entire arena. Sadly, it has seemingly been downhill since.
Joel’s wife Alexis Roderick thanks fans for their thoughts and well wishes for the hitmaker, adding, “We are hopeful for his recovery.” Billy Joel and his family remain optimistic.
That said, life expectancy with NPH can vary. It all depends on how severe the symptoms are. Whether other health problems are present, and how well treatment works. While NPH isn’t considered directly fatal, it can seriously impact quality of life.
Treatment is often very successful with a shunt, which opens the pathways for the fluid to pass in greater amounts from the brain into the general circulation. Billy’s prognosis depends on how much damage he has already.
For now, Billy Joel is following doctors’ orders. He will undergo physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during that time. He has canceled concerts, including an eight-performance tour, through July 2026.
In the meantime, with determination and the steady support of his loved ones and fans, there is hope that Billy Joel will soon be back on stage doing what he loves most.
