Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” just got a major dose of star power. Three-time Tony Award winner Billy Porter has officially joined the cast as “Magno Stift” in the highly anticipated prequel to Suzanne Collins’ bestselling series. Porter joins an already stacked cast that includes Joseph Zada, Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, Ben Wang, Ralph Fiennes, Elle Fanning, and Kieran Culkin. The film will be directed by franchise veteran Francis Lawrence and is set for release on November 20, 2026.

The screenplay is written by Oscar-nominated writer Billy Ray. Longtime “Hunger Games” producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are returning under Color Force. Cameron MacConomy will serve as executive producer.

While the casting announcement thrilled many fans, it also sparked mixed reactions online. Supporters celebrated Porter’s inclusion, calling it a bold and inspired choice. Supporters cheered the announcement with comments like, “This is not just casting, it’s a virtual serve. Billy’s about to own it,” and “Billy Porter in the HG universe?? I’m seated.” Another fan joked, “He will bring his own outfits, I bet,” while others simply said, “Very nice! Keep the good news coming.”

However, some reactions were far less enthusiastic, with detractors calling for a “recast” and accusing the production of going too “woke,” labeling it “one of the worst casting decisions.” “We don’t want woke mess,” one X user said. “Movie ruined,” another wrote.

Producer Defends Billy Porter Casting in ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel

Despite the backlash, producer Nina Jacobson stood firmly behind the decision. “Billy is one of those rare performers who can dazzle and devastate in equal measure on stage and screen,” she said. “He made an indelible impression on me when we worked together on Pose, both as an actor and a human being. Casting this show has felt like winning the lottery every time one of our idols said yes to us. To be able to announce Glenn Close and Billy Porter together is an embarrassment of riches that we can all celebrate.”

Porter isn’t the only major name announced; eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close has also joined the cast as Drusilla Sickle, adding even more prestige to the project. “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” will explore the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The story takes place decades before the rise of Katniss Everdeen. With a mix of franchise veterans and new powerhouse talent, Lionsgate appears to be betting big on this prequel, and all eyes will be on how it delivers come November 2026.
