Is Matty Healy trying to send Taylor Swift a message? Over the weekend, The 1975 frontman appeared to reference his short-lived relationship with the singer at the group’s Glastonbury Festival set. Apart from shading his ex-girlfriend during their performance, Healy seemingly confirmed that a fan-favorite track from Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, is about him. The nod has everyone convinced he’s not entirely over Swift despite being engaged.
Matty Healy Reignites Drama With Taylor Swift
The 1975 was one of the main headline acts at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, held in Pilton, England. The British band performed so many of their hits throughout the night. While lead singer Matty Healy was on stage, some fans couldn’t help but notice an interesting detail in his outfit. For the occasion, the singer wore a white T-shirt, a black leather jacket, and blue jeans. At first glance, his ensemble seemed pretty ordinary. However, if you take a closer look, you’ll notice that Healy’s jacket features a series of pins with various phrases and images on them. One of the buttons was of the Disney character Peter Pan.
Did He Just Confirm A Fan Theory?
What’s so interesting about that? Well, fans think it’s a reference to Taylor Swift’s “Peter,” which is rumored to have been inspired by him. The track is featured on the anthology version of Swift’s 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department. The original record, released in April 2024, consisted of 16 tracks. However, the extended edition, known as the anthology version, featured 31 songs.
In “Peter,” Swift sings about a breakup that she hoped would just be temporary. She always imagined she and her partner would eventually find their way back to each other. When they reunited, she thought her lover would come back a more mature person. However, that didn’t happen, and she was forced to move on. “Forgive me, Peter, please know that I tried to hold on,” she sings during the track.
Many fans thought Matty Healy was the “Peter” Swift was referring to since their relationship has been on and off over the years. They were first romantically linked in November 2014. After remaining friends, the pair became involved in dating rumors again in May 2023. After just a few weeks of rekindling their romance, the two called it quits. Since then, Swift has moved on with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce.
He Also Called Himself “A Poet”
On top of that, Healy also appeared to reference The Tortured Poets Department a second time at the Glastonbury Festival. While talking to the crowd, the singer said he was “the best songwriter of my generation,” aka, “a poet.” Since it seemed he was shading Taylor Swift, fans found the moment “embarrassing.” They criticized him for bringing up their relationship not once but twice during his band’s set, especially as an engaged man. “If I was his fiancé, I’d be crashing out,” one person said.
Two years after the pair went their separate ways, it seems the drama between them continues.
