A groom’s mom planned to steal the spotlight at her son’s wedding in New Jersey with her outfit choice, as revealed by her soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Dean, on social media.
In a TikTok post, Dean shared photos of the dress her fiancé’s mother bought for their wedding. It was captioned, “You think you can hurt me? This is the dress my fiancé’s mother bought for our wedding.” The remaining slides displayed the gown from the front, back, and side views.
The photo, taken in a bridal store, revealed a backless wedding gown with thin straps and a fit-and-flare silhouette. The design hugged the body through the bodice, waist, and hips before flowing into a chapel-length train. Crafted with a nude underlayer and overlaid with intricate white floral lace embroidery, the gown featured a deep V-neckline and a daring open back. Scalloped lace edges an outfit that trailed seamlessly down to the sheer hem and train, an unmistakable bridal gown, not something suited for the groom’s mother.
When a social media user asked what her fiancé thought of the situation, Dean explained that her fiancé’s mother had flown in for the wedding and gone shopping in New Jersey. When her fiancé asked to see the dress, his mother claimed it was a “surprise.” He, however, insisted on seeing it. Once she finally revealed the gown, he frowned immediately and told her to return it, pointing out that she had clearly shopped at a bridal store.
Dean further explained that her fiancé’s mother eventually went back to exchange the dress before leaving the state. She later sent a photo of a navy-blue gown, which Dean considered a much more “appropriate mother-of-the-groom outfit.” To be extra sure, Dean even called the store to confirm the exchange and that the white gown was returned.
The post quickly went viral, drawing hundreds of shocked and concerned reactions: “If you’re shopping at a bridal store and you’re not the bride, make no mistake, you know what you’re doing and it’s bizarro AF.” one commenter wrote.

Another warned Dean: “Make sure you’re prepared for this behavior for the rest of your marriage.” One user questioned the motive, writing, “Why… why does she need to ‘surprise’ her son? On his wedding day, that is about him and his partner, and not at all about the mother?”
