Millions of people are being impacted by the government shutdown as they discover SNAP benefits will not be distributed in November as of now. But it’s not just the people who will be feeling the impact of the shutdown. Now, large grocery store chains and the entire industry is wondering if the shutdown will affect their numbers. The drop in benefits would cause lower sales, which means Walmart could be losing out on millions of dollars by the time benefits return. An Arizona man talks in his TikTok video about how it will be Walmart vs. Trump in the end.
Dahmmy (@nsddahmmy) posted a video titled, “Walmart vs. Trump is going to be one for the books.” He says that, by the end of the Trump administration, we’ll either “have Walmart or Trump” but “not both.” He also states that Walmart relies heavily on people who receive SNAP benefits across all states in the U.S. Walmart actually “captures one out of four dollars in the SNAP budget,” according to Dahmmy. Other data shows that “94% of recipients shop at Walmart.” Without recipients receiving their benefits, how will a company like Walmart continue to thrive?
To make matters worse, the shutdown and a halt to benefits will affect Walmart workers and not just shoppers. Dahmmy shows studies where Walmart has donated billions to anti-hunger initiatives. These initiatives don’t just help people in their community, but also those who work for the big-name chain. The unfortunate reality is that Walmart has a massive amount of workers who rely on food stamps and Medicaid. Dahmmy says that it is a “predatory capitalist company.”
Dahmmy goes on to say that there’s more to focus on than just the loss of SNAP benefits, though. What about the tariffs that President Trump imposed recently? As a Walmart CEO has since stated, “Higher tariffs will result in higher prices.” This is just another slight against the American people, who struggle to afford groceries as it is.
As one commenter questioned, “Not only are they gonna lose 25 BILLION, but I’ll give you 3 guesses of where people are gonna go to shoplift food?!” Another person mentioned, “Their entire payroll structure is built around paying their employees so low that they use their SNAP benefits in the store they work in.” It’s a sad and cruel country that we live in. Time will tell if things get better for those in need but we shouldn’t really look forward to it anytime soon.
