Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves Chun-Li Hands-On Preview – The Queen of Fighters

An unmatched kung-fu master

It’s already known by many Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves players that the final fighter to close the crossover with Street Fighter 6 is Chun-Li, and let me tell you, she does so with a golden ribbon. This kung-fu master and queen of fighters in the eyes of many, brings her iconic moves, with many of them straight out of SF6. To my surprise, mastering this legendary fighter was much easier in City of the Wolves, making it one of the best stages where we’ve seen Chun-Li.

The Martial Arts Master Has Arrived

For this preview build, I only had access to Chun-Li during Practice and Versus modes. However, those were enough to let me see just how agile, deadly, and easy to use this martial arts master was.

Before jumping into a versus match, I took Chun-Li out for a Spinning Bird Kick practice in training mode, and I must say I was pretty surprised just to see how well SNK did to translate her Street Fighter 6 moves to City of the Wolves. If you haven’t touched the former, then don’t worry, as understanding Chun-Li’s moves is quite easy and, oddly enough, I also found her easier to play compared to her SF6 counterpart.

I took her out for a spin in both Arcade and Smart, the latter being my favorite, and both felt great to use. In Arcade, Chun-Li’s moves still retain that challenge of having the queen of kicks pull off her long and devastating combos that end with a flashy kick. However, in Smart controls, executing her combos is much easier, and the one you’ll be pulling off the most is in line with many of the moves you can perform in the Modern control scheme of Street Fighter 6.

After some practice, I tried Chun-Li in a few versus matches, especially against Mai, who is another one vying for the Queen of Fighters title, and I have to say that I didn’t feel Chun-Li’s skill ceiling to be as high as in other iterations of this character. I’ve always stuck with different characters in Street Fighter, but Chun-Li might become my main in City of Wolves, which is quite ironic when I say it out loud.

While I would have loved to try her EOST or Arcade, the truth is that I fell in love with one of my favorite fighting characters all over again thanks to how well SNK adapted her to CotW‘s systems.

Wrapping Up An Excellent Crossover

Now that Chun-Li is ready to land on Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, I can confidently say that this crossover is among the best we’ve seen in any fighting series. Strangely enough, Mai has always been my main in Street Fighter 6 since she released, and now, Chun-Li will be my main in CotW. It is strange to see these fighters more comfortable outside of their original stages, but that’s the alluring charm of the crossover. Hopefully, this will inspire SNK and Capcom to keep collaborating, because I’m always glad to see a good crossover, especially one executed as well as this one.
