Doctors and nurses should prioritize patients’ safety over paperwork. After all, the patient’s life shouldn’t be less important than paperwork. This didn’t apply to a disgusting Texas nurse who left a Black woman in active labor and screaming in pain. This was at Dallas Regional Medical Hospital. The woman’s family shared a video of her sitting on a chair inside the hospital while a nurse was sitting at a computer to finish paperwork. It was clear that the woman was in active labor, especially with the way she was screaming, but the nurse refused to offer her any help. What she did instead was to focus on getting information without having any sympathy or a sense of urgency.
The Texas nurse looked like she didn’t care at all that her patient was suffering. She kept asking one question after another such as “When is your due date?” to which the woman responded that it was right now. All of this is happening while the pregnant lady is screaming. The nurse then started asking stupid questions that made it look like she was deliberately delaying help. She asked her how many times she had been pregnant, and when the woman answered three, she asked her if this was her third pregnancy. She then asked her if she had two babies at home which is basically the same question said differently.
The woman’s family said that the nurse kept her in the waiting area for more than 30 minutes. They also stated that she gave birth only 12 minutes after the video was filmed. “Y’all treat all your patients like this or just the Black ones?” the woman’s mother asked the nurse, who didn’t respond. The woman then kept screaming and crying all while the nurse was making a phone call to give her information to someone. Another video included more screaming without anyone moving to take her to the delivery room. There is no way that this isn’t negligence.
What Exactly Happened
The Texas woman’s mom shared another video where she explained the entire situation. She said that her daughter got into active labor at home and they informed the hospital that they were coming. Once they were outside of the emergency room, the nurses there told them to go to the front despite the condition the woman was in. Her mother did just that, and a nurse at the front started getting paperwork rather than helping the poor woman. Plus, instead of helping with the wheelchair, the nurse told the mom where to find one. She then told her that she won’t come outside with her to bring her daughter in. Isn’t that part of her job?
Finally, an officer at the hospital helped the mom bring her daughter inside. Rather than help her immediately, they told the family they can’t do anything until she signs some paperwork. All of this is happening while the woman is screaming that the baby is coming. Even after the daughter managed to sign the papers, the charge nurse refused to get her to the delivery until she finished even more paperwork. At the end of the video, the mom advised everyone not to go to the hospital. She pointed out how no one there cared about her daughter at all.
A third video showed the same treatment as the nurse was still focused on the computer rather than the woman screaming beside her. The pregnant lady was still nice despite this treatment and called the nurse, ” Ma’am, ” only for her to tell her that she couldn’t help her. Then why are you there? Unfortunately, all of this affected the baby. The mom provided an update after her daughter gave birth. She said that the baby would have to go through several tests because he was born with his eyes open.
The stress and trauma also caused the baby to have a bowel movement while still inside and the fluids there were green. Hopefully, he and the mom would both be okay. What is even more shocking is that the mother revealed that her daughter was crowning while she was in the wheelchair. According to WebMD, crowning is “when you can see the top of your baby’s head through the opening of your vagina. This moment happens during the second stage of labor, when you push and deliver your newborn.” How could they let this happen while she was still in the wheelchair?
People Reacting to the Disgusting Texas Nurse’s Behavior
The painful screams of the Texas woman, all while the nurse ignored her, were enough to make the video go viral. So far, it has had over 13 million views, and almost everyone was shocked and furious at how she was treated. Many pointed out how Black women get mistreated and this might be the case here. This claim is valid and proven scientifically as well. According to the CDC, “Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women.” This made many people believe that this had to do with race as one person wrote, “Medical racism is REAL.” One woman also said, “This is exactly why I’m going into OBGYN! Black women deserve better!!!”
More people were certain that what happened to the Texas woman was because of racism. “Those ER nurses were 100% discriminating yall. The fact that y’all called in and they had all her Info already. There’s no reason to stop labor to sign paperwork,” one woman wrote. The way the hospital staff acted disgusted several nurses. “As someone who works at in the ER, she was supposed to be in a bed…immediately, not even a wheel chair. You NEVER make someone in active labor wait. EVER,” one nurse said. Another nurse wrote, “Please file a complaint, I’m a nurse and this is unacceptable behavior from a nurse.” Hundreds of comments then asked the family to sue the hospital. They should definitely do that.
