If you’re a person of color in a mostly-white neighborhood, you’re bound to come across a hateful Karen or two. As racism runs rampant in much of America, it’s not surprising to run into somebody who just wants to show their true judgmental colors. This is what happened in Indiana when a black woman decided to check out a new house in a Hammond, Indiana neighborhood. A Karen couldn’t control herself and just had to open her mouth.
Ky Karter (@sayheymskarter) posted a TikTok video after a run-in with a Karen that left her feeling fatigued. At the time, Ky was in Hammond, visiting a new neighborhood to look at a potential home. The white Karen apparently didn’t want a black woman being her next-door neighbor and said the most hateful thing. When Ky told her she was looking at the house to potentially buy it, the Karen asked, “What, with welfare?”
This prompted Ky to stand up for herself because she wasn’t about to just back down after a comment like that. As Ky confronts her about her comments and the fact that she blocked her driveway off in a territorial way, the Karen tries to fight back but fails. The entire time, she’s walking toward Ky in what’s supposed to be a threatening manner, with her small dog under her arm. Ky tries to explain to the Karen that it’s apparent she had a problem with them from the time they entered the neighborhood.
To add to the hilarity, Ky tells the Karen that she has no right to talk about welfare. The reason? It was initially intended for unemployed white people in its creation. The Karen shakes her head in disbelief and has nothing to say about that. In the end, Ky tells her that she’ll “purposely” move to the neighborhood to become her neighbor. Apparently, Karen hasn’t had enough because she continues to say racist things, including that “black people bring crime” to neighborhoods. Ky tries to school her but, because she’s incredibly ignorant, she has nothing to say about any of this.
One commenter urged, “Don’t let her stop you from moving in.” But who wants to have a neighbor like that, anyway? Another person said, “I’m so glad that someone is speaking their mind like I would. Oh my God. I’m glad that you guys are getting the picture now. Give them the same energy that they give you.” Simply allowing racism to happen is never the answer. I’m glad she said what she said, even if this Karen is too thick-headed to understand.
